Thinking of buying ‘compatible’ racking components?

Don’t! The reason is this: manufacturers’ rack performance specifications are only valid where a block of racking is made up of the same product. And the key word is ‘same’, which is not the same as ‘compatible’.

Plenty of racking suppliers offer ‘compatible’ racking. But compatibility means more than simply a physical fit. Performance can be significantly compromised by apparently small factors: the size of upright perforations, the size and type of hook or – invisible but most important – material strengths.

When such alternative-brand spares are fitted to racking of another brand, the spares supplier’s warranty usually only covers the parts themselves, not the full rack. Similarly, the original manufacturer’s warranty can’t be expected to cover spares of another make.

A manufacturer’s load data and signage may not be applicable to replacement ‘compatible’ material, which puts doubt over its relevance to the entire rack. ‘Compatible’ racking can increase risk. It can also transfer accident liability from the maker, if not to the owner, certainly to a legal tangle.

Don’t be tempted to source spares and repairs or rack extensions from suppliers of ‘compatible’ racking. Specify the original brand and type of racking, and get the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have maximum racking safety and integrity.
